Current Projects

The way we’ve been building communities and local economies is broken. Outdated policies and paradigms underpin a model of development that leaves too many people behind, exacerbates division and inequality, and shapes places that aren’t good for people, the environment, or the economy.

Fortunately, a growing number of communities and local leaders see this and want to fix it. We work with local partners to identify and solve local challenges, and come together around a shared vision for the future. In addition to technical and policy solutions, we help them strengthen community engagement, expand community leadership, and learn to collaborate effectively so they can build the civic capacity and political will needed to advance real solutions and sustain progress over the long-term.

West End Vision Project

The West End is a rural region in southwest Colorado working to sustain its ranching heritage and the vitality of its communities as it transitions away from coal and uranium mining. While attending our Building Better Places Training, a team of local leaders from the West End communities of Nucla, Naturita, and Norwood agreed that the region’s future depends on working together. This intergovernmental team applied for our assistance to help bring their communities together to develop a shared vision and strategy for the region. The West End Vision Project will guide future community and economic development efforts as the region charts a new path forward to a more prosperous future. The project is well underway and will wrap-up in 2026.

One Community Project

Nestled above 10,000 feet, the Leadville and Lake County community is home to stunning scenery, a deep mining history, and a diverse population. Long thought of as a working class community, in recent years, the City and County have faced rising cost of living, workforce housing challenges, environmental impacts of growth and tourism, and cultural division. After attending our Building Better Places Training, leaders from City and County applied for our assistance to build a community vision for the future and to develop a roadmap to get there. The One Community Project, expected to end in 2026, will result in the community’s first-ever joint City and County comprehensive plan, providing a blueprint to guide future development, growth, and change.

Steamboat Springs Brown Ranch Community Deliberation

In 2021, the Yampa Valley Housing Authority (YVHA) purchased the 534-acre Brown Ranch property with a $24 million anonymous donation. The gift presented an opportunity to build a significant number of homes locals could afford. However, the proposal to annex the property became highly controversial and was rejected by voters in 2024 over its cost and scale. The vote left the community deeply divided, with both sides concerned about preserving Steamboat’s character. In response, the City Council engaged Community Builders to guide a deliberative process exploring Brown Ranch’s role in workforce housing, bringing people together, engaging diverse voices, and creating a transparent way to explore options. From this, the Brown Ranch Community Solutions Project emerged, bringing residents together to explore how Brown Ranch could be part of a broader housing approach. A representative team of residents with differing views—the Deliberation & Stewardship Team (DST)— worked to deliberate, make decisions, bridge divides, and build understanding. While some disagreements remain, the team voted in 2025 to pursue a viable path for annexation and development for affordable housing. We are now working with the community on the next phase, focused on developing a new approach and plan for Brown Ranch.

Brownfields Technical Assistance

Brownfields are the forgotten places—the old gas station, manufacturing plant, abandoned work sites— that now sit untouched due to potential environmental risks. While they can be barriers to community revitalization, they are also ripe opportunities to boost local economies, filling community needs such as affordable housing, community centers, or business incubators. Community Builders guides communities through identifying and revitalizing brownfields through the Colorado Brownfields Partnership, a collaboration with 9th Path Advisors and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, as well as through Kansas State University’s Technical Assistance to Brownfields program.

Through these programs, we provide communities with the resources, guidance, and support needed to clean up and redevelop brownfield sites. In doing so, we are cleaning up legacy pollutants  and opening doors for the community benefit, making stronger places across the West.

All Projects

We work throughout the American West with all kinds of communities experiencing all kinds of issues. From small towns to growing cities, we assist in grounding strong local partnerships and engaging the entire community in an effort to create healthy, equitable, and prosperous places.
